Students in this course will learn to develop rhetorically-effective and user-centered content for the Web. We will examine the relationships between human beings and technology while exploring strategies for using language to mediate those relationships. Students in this hands-on course will also learn about user experience (UX) design by designing and conducting tests for real-world web texts.
This course offers an exploration of writing in professional contexts with emphasis on writing for technical audiences. Students practice composing a variety of documents for different purposes. In addition to written documents—such as email and memoranda, reports and proposals, and instructions and procedures—students also learn to compose in more multimodal genres, like oral presentations and web-based projects. Other topics may include research strategies for technical writers, communication ethics, designing and delivering visual information, writing for social media, and usability and user experience design. Students also draft an early career application portfolio and learn strategies for maintaining and developing it throughout their career.
Aimed at future teachers but open to all majors, this course explores writing strategies, theoretical frameworks, and terminology for teaching composition and literature. We will take a “writing about writing” approach to the topic of expository writing, exploring our relationships to writing as individuals and as members of different discourse communities. We will read and compose a variety of texts on the topics of rhetoric, literacy, and discourse, and pedagogy. Course concepts and readings will aim to familiarize students with key concepts from the licensure exam for Louisiana middle school and high school teachers.
Aimed at future teachers but open to all majors, this course explores key authors from major periods, including the Enlightenment, Romanticism, Modernism, and more. In addition to discussing literary terms and concepts, we will also learn about rhetorical theory. Course concepts and readings will aim to familiarize students with key concepts from the licensure exam for Louisiana middle school and high school teachers.
